Back in Australia, Carmilla Hyde took out Best Feature at the prestigious 2010 South Australian Screen Awards, in front of a glamorous crowd of A-list filmmakers and local celebrities.

Gaining local accolades was a sweet victory for de Vries, who admitted to be being nervous as hell before the award was announced. The South Australian Screen Awards celebrate the depth of talent working in this state and recognises high achievement in production, direction, editing, cinematography and composition. Hosted by Sydney comedian and actor George Kapiniaris (Broken Hill, Bad Language) and opened by SA's federal minister, the Hon. Kate Ellis, the red-carpet Gala Awards night is Adelaide’s favourite annual screen industry party, attracting the who’s who of the local filmmaking community.

The indie film’s growing success kicked off with an opening season at the Mercury Cinema in August 2009 (the highest grossing film that year), and sell-out events in the Barossa Valley and the 10th Melbourne Underground Film Festival. Carmilla picked up two majors at MUFF for Best Guerrilla Film (previously won by James Wan of Saw) and Best Supporting Actress for Georgii Speakman when the film sold out its high-profile MUFF X premiere. As a consequence of the MUFF Awards, the film received a fair amount of local media attention and some glowing reviews.

One of Australia’s most internationally successful comic book writers and artists (Phantom, Batman, Green Lantern, Star Trek and Mad Magazine) Carmilla Hyde’s writer and director Dave de Vries is no stranger to awards. In the world of comicbooks and magazines, his work has netted him won him two “Stanleys” for “Best Adventure Strip”, the ASME (Australian Society of Magazine Editors) 1998 for Best Magazine Cover - News and Feature, and the OZ Con Awards "Writer of the Year".
